ABOUT The Institution of Engineers (India) Tamilnadu State Centre
The Tamilnadu State Centre was formed in the year 1922 with Mr AA Briggs as its first Chairman and Mr E J Greenwood as its Honorary Secretary.
The meetings were held in the Public Works Department Buildings at Chepauk, Ripon Building, Bharat and Khaleel Mansions, College of Engineering, Guindy, Indian Mutual Buildings and the Madras Office of the Concrete Association of India. The ground floor of the present building came into existence in 1951 and the first floor was built in 1957.
The Tamilnadu State Centre is being governed by a Committee comprising of a Chairman, Honorary Secretary and Corporate Members elected from 15 Engineering Disciplines viz. Agricultural Engg., Aerospace Engineering, Architectural Engg., Civil Engg.., Chemical Engg., Computer Engg., Electrical Engg., Electronics & Commn. Engg., Environmental Engg., Marine Engg., Mechanical Engg., Metallurgy & Materials Science Engg., Mining Engineering, Production Engg., Textile Engineering.
At present the Tamilnadu State Centre has 8 Local Centres functioning at Coimbatore, Neyveli, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Ranipet, Kalpakkam, Salem and Tuticorin and we have a total membership of 13725 Corporate Members ( Fellow Members, Members, Associate Members ) and Non Corporate Members (AIE) are 5159 We have the strength of Technician and Senior Technicians numbering 64689.Thus the total membership of Tamilnadu State Centre is 83573 at on 30th June 2010 .
So far, the Tamilandu State Centre has had 60 Chairmen and and 29 Honorary Secretaries. The main objective of the Centre is dissemination of Engineering knowledge through conduct of various technical activities such as Lecture Meetings, Seminars, Workshops, Symposiums, All India Seminars, National Conventions, International Conferences.
Originally the main objective of the TamilNadu State Centre the Sections A & B Examinations of AMIE on behalf of the IEI HQ at Chennai and at the Local Centres at Coimbatore, Neyveli, Tiruchirapalli and at Madurai.
The Tamilnadu State Centre has a full fledged Library with over 7000 Engineering Books of all engineering disciplines . Some of the rare books on engineering are also available apart from the Technical Journals published by the Head Quarters .
